Conservation & Ethical Breeding
Wiggly Woodlice
At Wiggly Woodlice, conservation and responsible breeding are at the heart of what we do.
Isopods may be small, but the ecosystems they come from are complex, fragile, and incredibly important. As keepers and breeders, we believe it is our responsibility to protect both the species we keep and the environments they originate from.
Our Commitment to Ethical Sourcing
Where possible, we prioritise captive bred (CB/BC) stock.
Captive breeding:
• Reduces pressure on wild populations
• Supports sustainable hobby growth
• Produces hardier, more adaptable animals
• Encourages long-term stability in the hobby
Wild caught specimens are sometimes necessary to introduce new genetics into the hobby, but responsible breeding ensures that long-term demand does not rely on continuous wild collection.
Protecting Wild Populations
Many isopod species originate from highly specific environments — tropical forests, limestone caves, or microhabitats that are sensitive to disruption.
Unsustainable harvesting can:
• Reduce local population numbers
• Damage fragile habitats
• Disrupt natural ecological balance
By supporting ethical breeders and captive propagation, you help reduce unnecessary collection from the wild.
Responsible Husbandry
Conservation does not stop at sourcing.
Ethical keeping also means:
• Providing appropriate habitat conditions
• Avoiding overbreeding for quick resale
• Maintaining genetic diversity where possible
• Educating customers honestly about care requirements
We believe in transparent communication. If a species has specific needs or sensitivities, we make that clear.
Sustainability in Practice
Our approach includes:
• Promoting captive bred lines
• Offering realistic care guidance
• Discouraging impulse purchases
• Encouraging research before buying
Healthy colonies in captivity reduce the need for further wild collection and help stabilise rare species within the hobby.
Education & Awareness
Part of ethical breeding is education.
We aim to help keepers understand:
• The difference between CB and WC
• Why ventilation and substrate health matter
• How to build stable, long-term colonies
An informed hobbyist community is a more sustainable one.
Looking Forward
Isopod keeping is growing rapidly across the UK and beyond.
With growth comes responsibility.
By choosing ethically sourced animals and maintaining responsible care standards, we can ensure that the hobby remains sustainable, conservation-aware, and respected.
At Wiggly Woodlice, we are proud to be part of that future.
